The Church of the Force is not the only organization dedicated to the Force other than the Jedi, either.
Lor San Tekka served a similar role to recover lost artifacts of the Jedi Order up until his death at Kylo Ren's hands. This interlude shows how much importance the Church of the Force placed within the artifacts of the Force and the Jedi. Addar's fate afterward is unknown, but it's likely that he died trapped in the cave with the restored crystals. Addar himself is doubtful, but he ultimately is the only one to survive to complete the task. The pilgrims include Addar, a boy whose mother helped found the modern version of the church. That duty to restore and return artifacts of the Force stolen by the Empire seems to be one of the Church's main goals in the era following the Original Trilogy. In the novel, pilgrims from the Church of the Force attempt to return stolen kyber crystals to the planet Christophsis.

But while the Church's history seems to have been lost with the ascent of the Empire, the recent young-adult novel Star Wars: The High Republic: Out of the Shadows reveals the Church of the Force has a centuries-old history, and membership has been a San Tekka family tradition. That goal seems to be a major driving force behind the Church of the Force after the Empire's rise. In the Sequel Trilogy era, Lor uses his faith to help Luke Skywalker gather information on the Jedi Order to use in training the next generation. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lor San Tekka is part of the Church of the Force, whose members followed the Jedi Order’s tenets without being Jedi themselves. However, they aren't the only group affiliated with the Light Side. Throughout the Star Wars universe, the Jedi are viewed as the main source of knowledge on the Force.
